Beginning Tuesday, July 1, Metro is making it easier for senior citizens to get a discount when riding Metrobus and Metrorail. Metro is replacing the senior ID card with a senior SmarTrip® card. The new card eliminates the need for senior citizens to apply and wait for a senior ID card.
The new senior SmarTrip® card is bright yellow and reduced fare is automatically deducted from the card. To get the senior SmarTrip® card, senior citizens must show proof of age with a valid driver’s license, government-issued photo ID, Medicare card or passport with date of birth.
Senior SmarTrip® cards are available for purchase at Prince George’s County Memorial Library System branches. After purchasing a senior SmarTrip® card for $5, you will need to add value to the card at any Metrorail station. For more information about how to register and use a SmarTrip® card, please visit http://www.wmata.com/riding/SmarTrip.cfm or call 1-888-762-7874.
Customers who already have a bronze senior ID card may continue to use their card until it expires.
