Position Title: Circulation Assistant (eligibility list effective for six months)
Location: Various Locations throughout the Library System in Prince George's County, Maryland
Hours: Full (40 hours/week) and Part-time (20 and 30 hours/week). All schedules include a combination of daytime, evening and Saturday hours.
Salary:
40 hours - $28,939
30 hours - $21,703
20 hours - $14,469

Examples of Duties: Charges and discharges Library materials; ensures transactions are recorded correctly. Traps reserve items; sorts returned materials; processes inter-library loans and reserves; notifies customers of item availability and when item is overdue; processes claim returns and collection notices; puts aside materials not on file for entry into database. Registers new borrowers and issues cards; explains Library policies and procedures. Examines returned materials for damage; assesses customer if applicable; places damaged materials in assigned location. Collects money; prepares cash reports; issues receipts. Shelves materials; straightens and reads shelves. Receives and directs incoming calls; responds to directional questions. Follows policies and procedures in Circulation Manual; maintains an awareness of materials and information available to the public; performs major circulation responsibilities on a rotating basis; substitutes in other branches. Enters information into computer system. Performs other duties or responsibilities that are related to the position.
Qualifications/Requirements: A high school diploma, or equivalent, and two (2) years of customer service and cash handling experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Ability to perform circulation tasks, including operating a cash register and computer. Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions and to quickly learn and adhere to prescribed policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to deal tactfully and efficiently with a diverse public and staff; excellent customer service skills. Work involves extensive standing, reaching, stooping, bending, grasping and moving objects; and use of computer, telephone and other office equipment.
