Thank you for your interest in the Prince George's County Memorial
Library System (PGCMLS). The Library is pleased to have the works
of many local authors in our collection. The Library wishes to
recognize the literary efforts of local authors by including their
works in the collection when possible. However, these works must
meet the Library's selection criteria and standards as detailed
in the Selection Policy for Library Materials. Copies are available
at the Information Desk in all PGCMLS branch libraries.
To guide local authors in their efforts to have their works selected
for the Library's collection, this booklet of information includes:
- outlines the procedures to follow in submitting your work
for consideration
- informs you of what you can expect the Library to do in support
of your writing endeavors and of what services we do not provide
- provides a list of helpful library resources for writers
- lists local writers' groups
- supplies you with lists of various review sources.
Prince George's County Memorial Library System Selection Office
Send a copy of your finished work to:
Prince George's County Memorial Library System
Central Services Facility
Selection Office/ Local Author Submission
9601 Capital Lane
Largo, Maryland 20774
Please include:
- your address and telephone number
- information on pricing, including discounts, shipping and
handling fees
- professional reviews or critiques of your work ( a list of
professional review sources appears later in this booklet)
Within one month, we will acknowledge receipt of your work. We
carefully evaluate all new books using the Library System's standard
selection procedures, but because of limits on staff time, we
cannot discuss individual titles with authors. Within three months
of receipt, we will send you a letter to let you know if your
work has been accepted for the Library's collection.
Acceptance of a copy of your work for the collection does not
guarantee that we will buy additional copies. If we buy more copies,
they may not be purchased directly from you.
Some works, especially works of nonfiction, may not be considered
without accompanying professional reviews. The Library relies
on professional reviews when making selection decisions, and it
is up to local authors to solicit reviews for their works. You
may resubmit your work if professional reviews appear at a later
time.
Works not accepted for the collection will be returned to the
name and address you have provided.
Through inclusion in the collection, the Library assists the
author's efforts to market his or her work to the larger community.
On occasion, further promotion may take place.
For example:
- an author is booked for our Meet the Author series, with the
event, author's photo and the book jacket featured in CURRENT,
the Library's newsletter.
- a branch library includes the item in a display or list on
a particular subject or genre.
The Library does not schedule authors for Meet the Author unless
their works are in the Library's collection. Inclusion of an author's
book in the Library's collection does not guarantee the author's
participation in the Library's Meet the Author program.
To be considered for a Meet the Author program, authors should
send a cover letter and press packet with reviews to:
Prince George's County Memorial Library System
Office of Public Relations & Programming
6532 Adelphi Road
Hyattsville, Maryland 20782
The Library bears no further obligation for marketing an author's
work. It is neither the role nor the responsibility of the public
library to provide any of the following services for authors.
Authors are fully responsible for securing these services:
| literary agent |
publisher |
| reviewer |
editor |
| proofreader |
publicist |
To assist you, the following pages include information on library
resources, writers' groups and review sources. We hope that you

For best results, select review sources that target your specific
market in terms of genre and intended audience. Market guides
such as Writer's Digest and Writer's Market can assist with your
research. Be certain to read and follow the specific guidelines
for each source before submitting your work. Ask at your library
branch's Information Desk for help finding these resources.
Selection librarians consult these review sources when considering
purchases. When submitting your work for consideration, please
include reviews from at least one of these sources whenever possible.
