The Prince George's County Memorial Library system is committed to meeting the informational and reading needs of all children and teens in the County and to develop a lifelong love of books, reading, and the use of libraries. Reference and reader's advisory services, as well as informal instruction in the use of the library, are available at all branches. Brief specific requests for information may be made by phone or by email as well.
Our Branches
Though children are welcome in all public areas of the Library, whether alone or with an adult, adults are encouraged to accompany their children in order to provide guidance and support. The Library places no restrictions on what a child may borrow; only a parent or guardian may do so. The one exception is that of DVDs and videos which may only be borrowed by adults (18 years and older) with an adult card .
Six branches (Bowie, Hyattsville, New Carrollton, Oxon Hill, Laurel and Surratts-Clinton) have Youth Specialists, librarians who are specially trained to serve children and teens.
Collection Highlights
Children's materials can be found in separate Children's Rooms at the Bowie, Greenbelt, Hyattsville, Laurel, New Carrollton, Oxon Hill and Surratts-Clinton branches. The specific aim of the children's collection is to provide materials which will anticipate and meet the diversified needs, interests, tastes and background of children from infancy through grade six. Included are materials such as cardboard, hardback and paperback books, recorded books, compact disks, and magazines. Though the Library generally does not buy textbooks for children, much of the collection does provide homework support.
All of our branches have collections with reading materials and recorded books specially selected and purchased to accomodate the teen reader's interest and intellect. The collection is selected for teens in grades seven through twelve.
Programming
The Library provides educational and cultural programming (including storytimes, book discussions and Summer Reading programs) to promote interest in literacy and literature, and to encourage children and teens to become lifelong library users
KidsCenter & TeenCenter
