Here are answers to some questions about how the Prince George's County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) is able to support, help and encourage local teachers:

Library Programs

Q: What kinds of free programs are available for school or parent/teacher groups from the Library?
A: Some of the programs which branch libraries can provide in elementary, middle and high schools or at the local branch are: storytimes and storytelling; booktalks; promotion of Library programs, such as Summer Reading; presentations on particular subjects (e. g., Black History Month, new books, science project ideas, etc.); instruction on using the Library for research; literacy presentations; PTA presentations and instruction on using the Library Catalog.

Q: How can teachers set up Library programs for a class or school?
A:
Contact your local Library branch for information on how to schedule a classroom visit or a field trip to the library.

Q: Who else can I contact for special program information?
A:
For teacher continuing education presentations, PTA presentations and other programming questions, you can contact Myra Katz, Children's Outreach Specialist (myra.katz@pgcmls.info) or Kelli Kanvin, Teen Outreach Specialist (kelli.kanvin@pgcmls.info).

Other Library Services

Q: How can teachers inform their local library of upcoming assignments?
A:
Use our assignment notification form to let us know about your assignments -- with advance notice, the Library can better try to meet your students' needs.

Q: Does the Library have booklists which I can use to make recommendations to my students?
A:
Yes, our web site contains many booklists as well as links to information about books, authors and reading. Try Kids' Read , Teen Booklists and Great Reads.

Q: How can multiple copies of a book be gathered for classroom use?
A:
Contact your local Library branch to see if copies can be collected for your use; please give library staff ample time to do this.

Q: How can an entire class (or school!) get library cards?
A:
Read our instructions for bulk (group) library card applications.

Q: What help can my students get at the Library?
A: Here are a few possibilities:

  • Help with finding materials for assignments and projects
  • Help with learning to use our catalog, databases and online sources for research
  • Help with finding good books to read for fun
  • Programs designed for their interests and age level (storytimes, book discussions, chess clubs, Teen Advisory Boards, etc.)
  • Our KidsCenter and TeenCenter have information, book suggestions and fun links just for them.
  • Free live homework help through our web site
  • Personal computers which students may use for research, homework or entertainment

Library Materials

Q: What kinds of materials are available at the Library?
A:
We have print, audio-visual and electronic materials:

General Collection:

Includes print materials such as books, magazines and pamphlets, Large Print materials, CDs, DVDs, Audio books and Videos. You can browse for titles in this collection via our online catalog.

Electronic Collection:

Databases
Subscription databases are commercial, copyrighted materials that PGCMLS licenses for the reference and research needs of its customers; often this material comes directly from printed books.
E-Reference Books
Online versions of printed books with bibliographic citations given; the content can be searched and parts printed. These books do not have to be checked out or downloaded.
Downloadable E-books and Audio Books.
